Her tennis looks make fashion headlines, and now Serena Williams has stepped out on court in one of the summer’s biggest trends.

Never one to disappoint with her directional outfits, the 23-time Grand Slam winner wore electric blue cycling shorts to Nike’s Queen of the Future event in New York.

She teamed the cycling shorts with a tartan-patch windbreaker and a Nike Air logo top, as she took to the court for a doubles match with fellow tennis superstars Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka and Sloane Stephens to inspire a new generation of sportswomen.

It’s no surprise that fashion-forward Serena picked up on a trend that was all over the Spring/Summer 2019 catwalks from Chanel, where knee-length shorts were paired with tweed jackets and straw hats, to Stella McCartney’s floral take.

Probably one of the most divisive trends of the summer, Serena showed that they’re definitely not just for the catwalk, or the bike for that matter.

Her look is just the latest in a series of well-planned outfits. At Wimbledon this summer, Serena wore an entirely new accessory. Coined ‘The Broosh’, the Nike Swoosh brooch was encrusted with 34 Swarovski crystals – the age Serena was when she last won a London Grand Slam in 2016.

And who could forget the controversial ‘warrior princess’ catsuit that she wore to the French Open in 2018 and was subsequently banned from future tournaments by the French Tennis Federation?

In true defiant style, she came back wearing a one-off monochrome two-piece designed by Virgil Abloh for Off-White x Nike at this year’s French Open, after previewing the look on Instagram.

With the US Open around the corner, we can’t wait to see what Serena brings to the court next.
